At a launch event in Putrajaya, the folks over at Sony Malaysia has officially launched the newest entry to their premium compact camera lineup, the RX100 VI. As opposed to being a complete all-around upgrade from the previous generation, the RX100 VI is meant for a slightly different use while still retaining the quality that the series has been known for.

It is the first in the series to include a high magnification zoom lens, as it packs the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm f/2.8 – f/4.5 lens. A lens like this would normally be big in size but they’ve somehow managed to integrate it to this and still maintain its small size.

The RX100 VI is equipped with the 20.1 MP 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip and an upgraded BIONZ X image processing system with a frond-end LSI. This new proccessing chip is said to improve image quality optimization in all shooting environments.

It also features a Fast Hybrid AF (autofocus) system with 315-point phase detection AF points on the sensor which enambles it to focus in just 0.03 seconds. It’s capable of shoothing up to 24 FPS at full resolution with continue AF / AE tracking and produce 4K resolution videos with full pixel readout and no pixel binning.

One of the most interesting things mentioned by Sony Malaysia about this new model is the high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (max speed at 1/32000 second). It helps reduce the rolling shutter effect which usually happens with fast-moving subjectts.

For most parts, the RX100 VI compact camera looks identical to any of its previous iterations. It still has its flip-up screen which makes it great for vlogging and selfies, it’s still relatively the same size, has the pop-up EVF, and a programmable ring which people would normally use for either focusing or zooming. The pop-up EVF this time will be ready for use immediately after pressing the button, as opposed to the previous generation where you still had to pull the viewfinder in order to properly see things.

During the live demonstration, we were shown samples of videos taken with the RX100 VI by Baki Zainal, a new ambassador for Sony Malaysia. While the video quality is crisp and clear, the audio from the built-in microphone felt rather hollow and noisy. Perhaps more in-depth testing is required before we give our verdict on that.

The all-new RX100 VI premium compact camera by Sony Malaysia will be available from 20th July 2018 onwards. It will be retailing for RM4,899. The VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip for the RX100 and RX0 on the other hand will be available from 13th August 2018 onwards for RM399.

Pokdepinion: I had the RX100 III before and it had some autofocus issues. I personally would like to see if that is still a problem in the new model, along with its battery life.
