Sony Xperia 1’s camera ties the POCOPHONE F1 — while being priced 3x as much

The Sony Xperia 1 has made its way through DxOMark’s tests, and the results are really appalling. The smartphone which many has hoped will turn the ailing Sony Xperia smartphone division’s fortunes around, did not do nearly as well as expected. It scored 91, which is exactly the same score as last year’s POCOPHONE F1.

Making matters worse is that the POCOPHONE F1 wasn’t even Xiaomi’s flagship in 2018. Just to put things into perspective, last year’s HUAWEI P20 Pro scored a whopping 109. This was last year, mind you. An iPhone 8 scored 92 on DxOMark.

DxOMark highlighted the Sony Xperia 1’s failure to trigger HDR consistently, noticeable artifacts, soft edges of the frame, texture-rendering irregularities and visible red-eye effect when using flash. I thought the latter is something which was solved by almost every camera maker since a very long time ago?

On the bright side, DxOMark noted the quick autofocus in all scenarios and good exposure even in low light. Needless to say, the Xperia 1 won’t be the smartphone you buy if you want one with a great camera.

Pocophone F1 camera

Almost every recent smartphone below RM2000 has a camera that’s better than the POCOPHONE F1, and if we were to consider how DxOMark places them as equivalents, you would probably be better off with more affordable smartphones.
