Spotify and Netflix had access to your Facebook messages

In a pretty interesting report by The New York Times, it appears that Facebook gave partners way more access than previously disclosed. Companies like Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft had access to some really private information on your Facebook. Spotify and Netflix? Well they actually slid into your PMs.

Facebook has reportedly allowed Spotify and Netflix the ability to read your private Facebook messages. Netflix has responded to The Verge regarding the matter:

“…enabled members to recommend TV shows and movies to their Facebook friends via Messenger or Netflix…. At no time did we access people’s private messages on Facebook, or ask for the ability to do so.”

Spotify’s use of the access into Messenger should be for a pretty similar purpose. However both Spotify and Netflix reportedly had the ability to read, write and delete your messages, which constitutes a grave breach of privacy. Netflix has already stopped allowing users to recommend shows way back in 2018, but Spotify continues to offer the ability to recommend songs via Messenger.

The full report by The New York Times goes on to name a number of other companies which had access to various information users have on Facebook. With Facebook being such a huge part of our lives, it probably is time to reevaluate our habits of putting everything online.
