Summary

The Razer Viper V3 Pro is what I believe is the king of FPS gaming right now, at least within the realm of the ones that adhere to typical competitive rules. Given the lack of versatility, it’s definitely not suitable for everyone, and its raw performance is certainly not something a lot of people are capable of making use of.

Razer Viper V3 Pro Review – Razer Synapse Issue

Under normal circumstances, we would have the tracking test here but due to issues with Razer Synapse 4 after numerous reinstallations and reboots, it detects the mouse but refuses to load properly. It’s perpertually loading so I will be omitting this part of the test. If you have the older Razer Synapse 3, you might want to stick with that for a while longer until Synapse 4 gets significant improvements. Unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury for myself right now.

The Good

Razer Viper V3 Pro Review – Front

The Razer Viper V3 Pro is a pretty popular gaming mouse, and for good reasons. For starters, it still uses an ambidextrous shape so you can use it with both your left and right hands. If you are a lefty, it’s worth noting that the two side buttons may be a bit awkward to use as it’s on the left but it’s not impossible to get used to it and actually make good use of it. The larger build makes it comfortable to use as you can easily rest your palm on it. Furthermore, it’s also insanely light at 54g, so you can move faster and use it with less fatigue.

It’s worth noting that despite the mouse being rather empty in terms of design, the surface texture makes it rather grippy. It’s easy to hold and use without feeling like it’s about to slip away. Of course, one could always use those Razer grip tapes to further bolster it but as it is, it’s already perfectly fine, and I personally prefer using any mouse without any kind of grip tapes or accessories on it.

In terms of latency, after using several gaming mice from different brands, the Razer Viper V3 Pro is undoubtedly the best performer around so far. The clicks feel far more stable to press down while the latency is just in a class of its own. It’s not to say that every other mouse around is slow, but this one is just faster and it’s easier to notice when you’re switching between this and any other gaming mouse while playing FPS games. This may very well be the standard bearer for competitive FPS gaming.

It comes with two large PTFE feet along with the improved Focus Pro 35K Optical sensor and Razer HyperSpeed Wireless technology, so you get a smooth glide with insanely fast response time without sacrificing accuracy. The 3rd Gen Razer Optical Mouse switches bring a lengthy life of 90 million clicks, which is always a plus. You can reduce the input lag even further thanks to the included Razer HyperPolling dongle, bringing you up to 8,000Hz of polling rate. This means it will detect movement once every 0.125ms compared to 1ms at 1,000Hz. Keep in mind that your battery will drain faster with higher polling rates.

Speaking of battery life, the Razer Viper V3 Pro certainly excels in this area. Razer claims that it will go from 17 hours (on 8000Hz polling rate) to 95 hours (on 1000Hz polling rate) and from my experience, I get about 80 hours of mixed usage as I change the polling rate depending on what I do. That 80 hours is still a pretty solid figure considering that one can easily use it for a whole week without charging it. I initially wanted to complain about the lack of a wireless charging pad for it but given the battery life, I’ll give it a pass. I’m sure they omitted it to ensure that weight remains low.

Lastly, you do get quite a bit of options to customize the mouse to your liking. Using Razer Synapse, you have the usual options of remapping all the buttons, changing the polling rate, and adjusting DPI settings. Furthermore, you have the option to adjust tracking distance, enabling asymmetric cut-off, and tinkering with power saving options for added versatility. All of these will be saved in the on-board memory, so you can move from PC to PC while retaining all of your customizations.

The Bad

Razer Viper V3 Pro Review – Side buttons

Of course, the Razer Viper V3 Pro has its drawbacks. For starters, the design is bland, even when you compare it to other Razer gaming mice. It’s a simple ambidextrous design in black, with no Razer Chroma RGB in sight. The only light you get here is the LED indicator. This shouldn’t be a dealbreaker however since you likely won’t see your mouse while you’re using it, and the lack of RGB lighting would further optimize its battery life. If you’re considering this to begin with, you’re likely focused on performance over aesthetics or any other factor anyway so this should be fine.

Razer Viper V3 Pro Review – Razer HyperPolling Dongle

Next up, it only has Razer HyperSpeed Wireless and wired as connectivity options, so no Bluetooth here. The lack of Bluetooth here is likely done to cut down on weight as much as possible, and those who value raw performance would likely not bother with Bluetooth as that connectivity option often brings latency. It’s something worth noting here in case you might need a versatile mouse for everything like for office use and gaming at home.

Lastly, and this shouldn’t be a surprise, is that the Razer Viper V3 Pro is an expensive gaming mouse. It’s retailing for RM829, though you can get it for about RM100 less these days. It’s also worth noting that the Razer HyperPolling dongle is included in the package to make the investment more worthwhile, but it’s still a hefty sum to drop for a mouse.

If you’re an avid FPS gamer and you want the best performance possible, then look no further than this. However, if you want something similar but with more versatility, you might as well go for the Razer Cobra Pro, though that one is about 20g heavier.

At the end of our Razer Viper V3 Pro review, I award this wireless gaming mouse with our coveted Gold Pokdeward.
