Cisco recently published new research highlighting a major shift in enterprise network infrastructure: the study indicates that 96% of IT leaders in Malaysia view modernized networks as essential to deploying AI, IoT, and cloud technologies, with 91% planning to increase network-related investment.
Modernized Network Is Key, Says Cisco

The findings show that as AI workloads generate more dynamic and latency-sensitive traffic, which puts strain on existing network infrastructure. At the same time, global outage costs – driven by cyberattacks, congestion, and misconfiguration – are projected to reach USD160 billion annually, with 80% of businesses experiencing at least one major disruption per year. In response, 97% of Malaysian IT leaders say resilience in network infrastructure is now critical.
Cisco’s research also shows a growing alignment between IT leaders and business executives. 97% of CEOs are expanding the use of AI, and 78% rely on their CIOs or CTOs to guide investment decisions; despite this momentum, 74% of CEOs believe outdated infrastructure is already limiting business growth. Over 90% of IT leaders surveyed said improved infrastructure will contribute to increased revenue, while 97% expect significant cost savings from smarter, more secure, and power-efficient networks.
While interest in autonomous, AI-powered networks is high (98% of respondents cite them as vital for growth), only 45% have deployed capabilities such as network segmentation, visibility, and control. Additionally, 71% report that their current data centers are insufficient for AI workloads, and 88% intend to expand capacity through on-premises and cloud infrastructure. The report also identifies barriers to capturing the full financial value from today’s networks, including siloed systems (59%), incomplete deployments (55%), and continued reliance on manual processes (48%).
“As businesses in Malaysia and around the world harness the power of AI, the network is the critical backbone that makes it all possible,” said Chee Kheong Lee, Managing Director, Cisco Malaysia. “To meet the needs of tomorrow’s businesses and protect against evolving threats, today’s networks must be faster, smarter, and more resilient. Businesses must recognize that a modernized network is key to driving future growth and success.”
