The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a monster of a CPU, and it pretty much destroyed any chances of Intel competing in the desktop CPU market, according to German retailer Mindfactory. Simply put, it’s looking very bleak for Team Blue right now.
AMD’s Desktop Dominance Continues
User @TechEpiphany on X (Twitter) has published the list of all CPUs sold via Mindfactory in the last month, and to summarize, AMD has sold over 23,000 units while Intel only sold a smidge above 2,000 units. That’s 92% AMD CPUs and just 8% Intel’s; just the 9800X3D alone has outsold all Intel CPUs combined four-to-one, and the best-selling Intel chips in the same period – the Core i5-14600KF – is only 30th in this list. Even the old Socket AM4 CPUs contributed over 5,000 units sold.

The massive success of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is owed to several factors. One, the second-gen 3D V-Cache architecture contributed to a big performance improvement and alleviated one of the biggest flaws of previous X3D designs, which is heat and clock speed penalties. With the new design, this enables the 9800X3D to be overclocked, a first for X3D processors.
Another reason is Intel’s failure to improve upon its aging Raptor Lake CPUs with its new Arrow Lake architecture, has inadvertently pushed most would-be buyers rushing to buy AMD’s top gaming CPU today. So much so, it’s causing shortages: AMD admitted the demand has been “unprecedented”, though production has been ramped up to address it.
On the contrary, Intel’s new Core Ultra 200 series has performed horribly in comparison to AMD’s latest generation chips. The best-selling Arrow Lake chip in the lineup is the Core Ultra 7 265K with just 50 units sold, and in total the lineup has only moved 185 units. That’s barely more than the 150 units that Core i5-14600KF contributed, and it’s hard to see if Intel can fix this with significant price cuts.
Pokdepinion: I didn’t quite expect the 9800X3D to be this popular.
