Everyone knows at this point that Windows 11 is especially notorious for its stringent system requirements. Meanwhile, Windows NT 4.0 – a name that you likely never heard if you’re born in 2000s and beyond – is somehow capable of supporting a CPU that’s 27 years newer than itself.

This impressive feat is courtesy of Reddit user O_MORES, who managed to run the OS on a “bare metal” system (that is computer speak for a physical device, instead of virtual machines). The hardware involved is the Intel Core i3-13100F, an ASUS H610 motherboard, two Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR4 modules, SanDisk ReadyCache SATA III SSD, and a 2-decade-old ATI Radeon X300 GPU that handles graphics output. (There’s also Creative SoundBlaster sound card for period-accurate audio hardware.)

While the user didn’t provide much details on how the feat was done, it’s known that the OS was pulled from another SSD which is then directly connected to this motherboard. Then, a UniATA driver is used to bypass the inaccessible boot device error. Fun fact: the system took just 15 seconds to boot, according to the user.

The user also took the system for a spin, running some games including FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 and the OpenGL-based GLQuake demo. You can click here to see the machine running Windows NT 4.0 in action:
