AMD Reveals Radeon RX 7900 Series, World’s First Multi-chiplet Gaming GPU

In the keynote hosted early morning (4AM Malaysian Time), AMD premiered its latest Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs with two new models – powered by RDNA3 architecture – the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT. Both GPUs mark the first ever gaming GPU produced using multi-chiplet design, similar to their own Ryzen processors.

AMD’s latest RDNA3 architecture marked a major upgrade across the board compared to RDNA2, with the chiplet design being the biggest change of all. Apart from that, here are the various upgrades the company has introduced for its next-gen GPUs:

  • AMD RDNA 3 Architecture – Featuring an advanced chiplet design, rearchitected compute units and second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology, RDNA 3 architecture delivers up to 54% more performance per watt than AMD RDNA 2.
  • Chiplet Design – The world’s first gaming GPU with a chiplet design delivers up to 15% higher frequencies at up to 54% better power efficiency.
  • Generational Uplift – The flagship AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX delivers up to 1.7X higher 4K performance than the Radeon RX 6950 XT.
  • DisplayPort 2.1 Support – The industry’s only high-end gaming graphics cards to support DisplayPort 2.1 technology with UHBR 13.5, enabling high-refresh 4K (up to 480Hz) or 8K (up to 165Hz) gaming on next-gen displays

On the software, AMD has announced a new update to FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 2.2) – which they claimed to reduce temporal ghosting issues. This update will begin rollout on Forza Horizon 5 starting November 8, 2022. Aside from that, they also hinted the next major version of FSR – dubbed FSR 3 – which features AMD Fluid Motion Frames technology. No specifics was said on what it does apart from claiming a 2x FPS boost, but this is likely a response against NVIDIA’s DLSS3 “Optical Flow Accelerator” feature, if the name is anything to go by.

AMD has also consolidated existing frame-boosting technologies, namely Radeon Super Resolution, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Anti-Lag under a single “one-click” option dubbed AMD HYPR-RX. The company claimed up to 85% boost in FPS in Dying Light 2 Stay Human with the RX 7900 XTX over stock settings.

The AMD Advantage program sees some degree of success on laptop markets, and this time the company carries the program to desktops as well, providing a turn-key solutions for those who need the performance. Certified desktops will feature top-of-the-line hardware such as Ryzen 9 7950X, paired with Radeon RX 7900 XTX, with the full software feature stack provided by AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition all available to users.

On top of that, various hardware requirements for Advantage certification include: high-quality chassis, liquid-cooled CPU, >2TB NVMe SSD storage, 32GB or higher DDR5 with AMD EXPO memory, 80+ Gold PSU, optimized acoustics, and are design to be easily customizable (AMD noted in the keynote this include tool-less access).
