AMD Radeon RX 7900M Flagship Laptop GPU Leaked, Featuring Cut Down Navi 31 Dies
AMD’s laptop GPU lineup so far consists of models spanning from RX 7600M up to RX 7700M, which is fairly limited all things considered. While there were leaks of a higher-end RX 7800M XT as well as RX 7900S (for low-power models), plus some models in between; all these chips are still belonging to Navi 32 silicon, which tops out at 60 compute units.
Enter RX 7900M: per Wccftech, this flagship AMD laptop GPU will be the first one to feature Navi 31 silicon, which meant it packs more cores than all the models leaked so far. In fact, the source alleges that it’ll feature 72 compute units – slightly less than the one seen in the desktop RX 7900 GRE. Effectively, this means it’ll be a cut-down version of the said desktop GPU.
Other specs include a 256-bit 16GB VRAM onboard, and a TDP rated for 160W; AMD SmartShift however will push the chip as far as 200 watts if the workload demands it. (For reference, the highest-end RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs maxes out at 175 watts when combined with Dynamic Boost.) The core count is also 20% more than desktop versions of RX 7800 XT, which should close the gap to the desktop chip’s performance considering its heat and power constraints.
As for launch date, this will be a surprise for some: it’s said that the chipmaker will be revealing this GPU alongside Threadripper PRO 7000WX series CPUs, which is set on October 19th. It’s unclear if there may be a launch model to go along with the GPU, though given the track record – expect a new AMD Advantage laptop to make its appearance by then.
Pokdepinion: Quite surprising this GPU has flew under the leaker’s radar for so long.
