Leaker Reveals AMD RDNA4 GPUs Through A Cryptic Tweet, Featuring Navi 48 & Navi 44

Hardware leaker @All_The_Watts has posted a tweet on X (Twitter) with a bunch of emojis including a bunch of animals and numbers. According to Wccftech, the message contains information regarding AMD’s upcoming RDNA4 (Radeon RX 8000 series) GPUs, which include two distinct silicon designs.

The first half of the message is essentially CPU codenames in the form of emojis – the dragon denotes Dragon Range (Ryzen 7045HX), the owl denotes Strix Point, and the meteor emoji is, of course, Intel’s Meteor Lake. But that’s not the point of the discussion today: below these emojis are a bunch of emoji-form numbers with the lesser/greater symbols separating them.

Wccftech has noted that based on this tweet, RDNA4 will have two silicon variants, Navi 48 and Navi 44. Unlike the previous Navi generations, the fourth generation seems to do away with the numbers in descending order (‘1’ in the second digit denotes the biggest chip, and so on), the Navi 48 will likely be the flagship of RDNA4 GPUs. The message hinted that Navi 48 will be slightly below a full-fat Navi 31 in terms of performance, but it’ll be faster than a cut-down variant of the silicon (like the one in the RX 7900 GRE).

Meanwhile, Navi 44 will be responsible for mid-range GPUs, and according to the tweet, it’ll sandwich between Navi 32 and Navi 33 as far as performance goes. Navi 33 is currently only used on the Radeon RX 7600 series, whereas Navi 32 currently powers RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT today. Hence, the claimed performance of Navi 44 should be very close to the RX 7700 XT, which uses a slightly cut-down Navi 32 silicon.

The same leaker also provided more details on the chips – namely, AMD will return to monolithic design for its upcoming GPUs. While MCM-based GPUs have benefits on paper, today’s implementation didn’t quite translate to real-life performance as RDNA3 in general has lagged behind NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series with its superior power efficiency. Furthermore, the leaker says RDNA4 will stick to the tried-and-true GDDR6, which is a sign that Team Red may give up competing at the leading edge of the GPU market.

Pokdepinion: At this point, Intel may end up being the bigger worry for AMD’s GPU business. Putting more resources to focus on the mainstream market seems appropriate as a response.
