Early teething problems have likely hit the new RTX 50 users, as many users reported issues with their new cards rendered inoperative due to black screens under a plethora of reasons. It’s still difficult to tell what are the common denominator, though NVIDIA confirmed it is now investigating.

RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 Issues Under Investigation

Some context: users have reported black screens from their RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs, though the cause varies quite a lot. Some of the cited causes include resolution change, heavy GPU workload, or multi-monitor setups; one group of people says the problem goes away after a hard reboot, while others found the problem to be persistent and have even seen cards being effectively bricked.

It has been speculated that the cause may be related to the new 572.16 driver (as users of older cards has reported similar issues), and several workarounds include switching to PCIe 4.0 mode (which won’t incur performance penalties) and a clean driver reinstall. Our testing of both cards thus far has yet to manifest any issues, though in any case, NVIDIA gave a short statement to PC Gamer when inquired:

We are investigating the reported issues with the RTX 50 series.

So, if you’re one of the very few owners of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 right now, hold tight – a hotfix may be on the way if this is determined to be a driver-related issue.

Pokdepinion: Hopefully fixes will arrive soon.
