U Mobile has announced that the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has become the first academic institution to join its Enterprise Innovation Platform (EIP), marking a formal collaboration between a Malaysian telco and a local university to advance 5G research and lay groundwork for future 6G development.
The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange held at the University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on 22 September 2026, witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The MoU was signed on behalf of U Mobile by Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen, and on behalf of IIUM by Rector Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar. U Mobile Chief Financial Officer Sandy Tsang represented the telco at the ceremony.
IIUM Joins Enterprise Innovation Platform
The partnership will see U Mobile powering a 5G Research Lab at IIUM’s Kulliyyah of Engineering using its ULTRA5G network. The lab is designed to give researchers and students a controlled environment for 5G research, testing, and teaching.
Through the EIP Hub’s sandbox and testing facilities, selected IIUM research projects can be developed, tested, and demonstrated – this setup is designed to speed up validation of practical use cases and build capabilities relevant to technologies including 6G. The collaboration will also support talent development through potential co-innovation programs that offer students and researchers practical industry exposure.
Areas being considered under the partnership include smart campus solutions, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, and digital twins. Promising use cases could progress beyond the research stage, and insights from pilot projects may be developed into case studies for EIP’s showcase and knowledge repository. As an initial activation, both parties will jointly identify at least two use cases for development. U Mobile has stated it is open to similar collaborations with other universities, researchers, technology partners, and industry players through EIP.
