Microsoft Tests Automatically Launching Copilot At Windows 11 Startup
Remember Clippy? Most people ended up hating it as the virtual assistant often got in the way of users’ actions, and it looks like Microsoft either didn’t take the memo or just simply wanted to try again after two decades. The company is looking into the possibility of automatically launching its hottest new stuff, the Copilot AI, at every boot of Windows 11 systems.
This feature is intended for “widescreen devices”, and according to The Verge, the company has since clarified that this is intended for devices with large displays – specifically, 27 inches minimum, with a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels (such as FHD). It also requires the system to have a multi-monitor setup, in which case it’ll occupy a spot in the primary monitor every time it boots up.
So this rules out a majority of users, and no laptop user will need to deal with another popup getting in the way. Gamers and power users, on the other hand, might not be a fan of this idea. “Not why I bought a widescreen monitor, Microsoft. Stop it,” says one user.
However, there’s some good news. For one, this can be disabled after the fact by going into Settings, under the Personalization > Copilot In Windows section. The company also assures that the feature is not guaranteed to ship as it is today. “We regularly try out different experiences with Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel that may not ever ship.” That said, how much do you trust that statement is entirely up to your judgement.
Pokdepinion: At least there’s the off switch, I guess. Not going to lie – I got sick with how many options get taken away from users in the name of “simplifying things”.
