Instagram’s Photo Grid Is No Longer Square, Visual Chaos Naturally Ensues

You may have noticed the photo grid of Instagram pages have now turned into vertical rectangle instead of the old square, and with it comes visual chaos to those pre-aligned images that made use of the social media platform’s longstanding square image formats.

Instagram Says Goodbye To Square

This idea certainly has been floated for several years, as the earliest known indication of the new design can be traced back to November 2022. Instagram later trialed this feature last August in limited capacity, before officially rolling out this new design to everyone on this platform. Unsurprisingly, this angered many users as the change breaks all the aligned images due to the new aspect ratio forcing images to crop in order to fit. One such example looks like this:

Justifying the new design decision, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said: “I know some of you really like your squares. And square photos are sort of the heritage of Instagram. But at this point, most of what’s uploaded, both photos and videos, are vertical in their orientation. And it just is a bummer to overly crop them.” Mosseri is adamant that this is necessary: “I know it’s a change. I know it’s a bit of a pain, but I think it’s a transitional pain.”

Unfortunately, there is no way of reverting this to the square grid layout – though the web version of Instagram has remained on the square grid, for now. Mosseri assures users that “over the long run, be excited that more of their photos and more of their videos are actually visible as intended in the profile as opposed to aggressively cropped.”
