iPad users, rejoice: after WhatsApp’s iPad release, Meta is reportedly launching Instagram for iPads later this year, per Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. The report states that development is “full steam ahead,” targeting launch sometime this year.
Instagram For iPads, At Last?
Just like it took practically forever for Apple to put a calculator on iPads, many may wonder why it also took Meta almost equally as long to finally get Instagram to function natively on Apple’s tablets. The reason mostly boils down to aspect ratio and image quality, according to Gurman.
In the early days of Instagram, posts mostly involved square images, and image quality wasn’t great with the phone cameras we had back then – ultimately, developers weren’t confident of how it’ll look in a big screen. Admittedly, that’s a rather odd reasoning given that Instagram has long existed in Android tablets, unless Apple played a part in ensuring the standards of every app it hosts (which is still a bit of a stretch, to say the least). Still, many years later, these concerns are no longer the case as both the app and smartphones have seen big changes in that timeframe.
Rumors of Instagram on iPads has began to surface as early as April this year, and Gurman pointed that the app is now already in the hands of some Meta employees for testing. Assuming no major obstacles ahead, we can expect the app to appear in iPad’s App Store later this year – although there’s no further specifics in terms of when that’ll be.
