Sometimes, you might end up clicking the wrong link because an ad has taken the top spot in the Google search results, and in some extreme cases that could land you into trouble with malicious links. To combat this, the search engine giant is testing the blue checkmarks to verify the website’s authenticity.

The checkmark is a common way of identifying authentic organizations or people in the modern web today, but this is mostly applicable to social media platforms until recently, when Google trialed the checkmarks in Gmail to indicate verified senders.

Similarly, in the context of Google search, the same checkmark serves the same purpose, given that both the Gmail and Search are equally susceptible to fake impersonations that often comes in the form of phishing attacks. For now, this seemed to be a limited test, as The Verge reports that not every Google account can see this change.

The Verge also points out that this feature is likely based on the BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) feature designed for Gmail. Organizations can obtain verification through this platform which can be displayed to users, so the same logic should apply to the Search UI as well.
