This might be bad news for owners of RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 GPUs (especially the latter): leaks suggest that NVIDIA may be giving a big VRAM upgrade for the SUPER variants of both models. The RTX 5080 SUPER and RTX 5070 SUPER are allegedly featuring 24GB and 18GB of VRAM respectively, as a result of utilizing all-new 3GB (24Gb) GDDR7 modules.

Big Upgrade For RTX 5080 SUPER & 5070 SUPER

In most cases, a GPU’s VRAM is typically determined by its memory bus width and total amount of memory packages onboard. Most GPUs with 128-bit memory bus today will allow for 4GB, 8GB or 16GB of VRAM configurations, whereas a 192-bit GPU is commonly paired with 6GB or 12GB of memory. As GDDR7 debuted 3G memory modules for the first time, this opens up additional possible VRAM configurations, by simply multiplying 3GB to the number of memory packages each GPU feature.

By switching the existing 2GB packages from RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 to the new 3GB ones, this effectively gives 50% more VRAM capacity to both cards while requiring minimal changes to the PCB and firmware; in fact, the 3GB modules has already seen its use on the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, which feature 24GB of VRAM. The recently announced RTX Pro 6000 workstation GPU is another model utilizing these new memory chips, with its video memory maxing out at 96GB.

Having more VRAM is always a good thing, especially as VRAM capacity is now a common gripe among mid-range NVIDIA GPU owners, limiting their capability in running games with high-resolution textures or graphically-demanding features, such as ray tracing. In fact, the RTX 5080 was originally planned with 24GB VRAM, but a seemingly last-minute change (likely due to supply issues) meant this high-end GPU ultimately settled with just 16GB.
