Don’t let Samsung’s recent launches of its Z8 series foldables distract you from the fact that for every three foldable smartphones sold in Malaysia, one of them is from HONOR. We’re paraphrasing here, but that’s basically what the Chinese smartphone maker wants to tell the public at this point in time, citing its rather successful sales record.
1 In 3 Foldables Sold In Malaysia Is An HONOR
Citing its “internal consumer data,” the company alleges that Malaysian smartphone users “have switched from leading flagship brands to HONOR foldables.” Given that the foldable smartphone market in Malaysia until relatively recently has been pretty much Samsung’s proverbial backyard (especially if you look at the book-style form factor), we’ll have to assume that the company is gobbling up the market share in expense of the Korean smartphone giant.
It’s also worth pointing out that HONOR is one of the few Chinese brands that has a relatively long presence in the foldable segment, particularly in the Malaysian market (and the brand as a whole is pretty strong market share-wise), spawning six generations of its Magic V series models, the most recent one of which was launched not too long ago. While brands like vivo and Oppo has their own equivalents, they haven’t seen the strong market impact that HONOR has enjoyed up until now.

HONOR also wants to point out that its Magic V6 is superior against that specific smartphone it couldn’t name for (presumably) legal reasons. For one, the former features maximum-achievable ingress protection ratings with IP68 and IP69K, while the latter is only IP48; battery and charging is another comparison point, with the Chinese smartphone maker confidently claiming 33% more capacity and 78% faster wired charging wattage (which is NOT to be confused with actual charging time, as the law of diminishing returns must be considered).
The company took a dig at Samsung’s latest foldable pricing, too – claiming its offerings don’t require local buyers “to pay a high price to access category-leading technology.” Let’s see how true that statement can be once the memory makers further up the DRAM module pricing, which HONOR (or every other tech brand, for that matter) is certainly not immune of. While the company is very keen on promoting its foldable in this rather convenient timing, we prefer you to check out our review to decide if it’s worth your money.
Pokdepinion: Good for you, HONOR, I guess?
