Overwatch Season 5 “A Grim Doctrine” is now live, bringing a new Support Hero, a brand-new Escort map, sweeping hero reworks, and a full slate of Halloween events. The season serves as the final chapter of the Reign of Talon storyline and marks one of the most content-heavy updates the game has seen in years.

Overwatch Season 5 Highlights

The centerpiece of the season is Doctrine, a new Support Hero with a dark history tied to Doomfist. His kit revolves around manipulating lifeforce across both teams. His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies at mid-to-long range, while mechanical bat-like drones boost team healing and attack speed. His Infuse ability amplifies his other skills situationally, and his Ultimate redistributes lifeforce, granting allies Overhealth while capping enemy maximum health.

Doctrine’s backstory traces a path through loss, survival technology, and eventual imprisonment at Grímsvötn, a former Overwatch Watchpoint built inside an Icelandic volcanic fissure. Doomfist has broken him free, and the new Escort map puts players right in the middle of that jailbreak. Grímsvötn is the first new Escort map in years, winding through fire, ice, and forgotten secrets the organisation would have preferred stayed buried.

The Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games Halloween event runs from 6 October to 2 November. Players enter as a random Hero and return from each death with stacking random powers. Each week, players direct Offerings toward Ashe, Moira, or Winston to determine which Hero rises into the mode next, with the playable roster eventually reaching 20 Heroes. Weekly Event Passes offer seasonal rewards alongside the mode.

Season 5 also delivers one of the largest single changes ever made to an existing Hero. Sombra has moved from the Damage role to Support, now functioning as a Support Tactician. Her new Hotfix ability heals a targeted ally after a short cast and can even be used while invisible without breaking stealth. Cyberspace creates a healing zone for allies while applying a new Weaken status to enemies, reducing their damage and healing output.

Roadhog has also received a rework. His Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger center projectile, and his new Trash Compactor ability lets him absorb incoming enemy projectiles before firing an explosive shot back, with damage scaling based on how much was absorbed.

The Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration, based on the Solo Leveling franchise, runs from 6 to 19 October. It introduces five crossover skins: Genji as Sung Jinwoo, Reaper as Igris, Anran as Cha Hae-In, Reinhardt as Iron, and Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In. Each skin draws from the distinct visual identity of its Solo Leveling character.

Two new Mythic cosmetics arrive this season. Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang transforms the Hero into a warrior pursuing immortality, accompanied by a customisable celestial dragon companion with four unlock levels covering hairstyles, dragon horns, colour palettes, and transformative VFX. Treblemaker is Lucio’s first Mythic Weapon skin, adding custom audio to healing and firing, reactive kill effects, and an elaborate UI that builds with each final blow. Its fourth level features a small animated frog that dances inside the weapon.

Season 5 also introduces Unvaulted Passes, which bring revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15 back into circulation. Players can progress one Unvaulted Pass alongside the current Battle Pass simultaneously, with match XP contributing to both. Any previously earned Free track progress carries over. Acquired Unvaulted Passes have no expiration date.

The Tech Witches collection, featuring D.Mon, Shion, Juno, Sierra, and Jetpack Cat in high-tech witch-themed skins, is available from 9 to 26 October. Team Drives, a Competitive mode feature that keeps winning teammates queued together, returns from 29 October to 1 November. The Season 5 Battle Pass includes five Legendary skins and three Epic skins, along with up to 80 Mythic Prisms.

Pokdepinion: They reworked Sombra into a healer and nobody saw it coming, which is very on-brand for her.
