Sea and OpenAI are bringing the Sea x OpenAI Regional Codex Hackathon Series to Malaysia, with the Kuala Lumpur edition set for Saturday, 5 December 2026 at Mandarin Oriental. The one-day event will gather up to 40 teams of developers, students, startups, and technology builders under the theme “Solving Unmet Needs with AI”, challenging participants to develop practical AI solutions using OpenAI’s Codex.

The Malaysia leg follows earlier editions held in Singapore and Taiwan, with the regional series also slated to visit Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand as it expands across Asia Pacific. Sea has been integrating Codex across its own engineering organization, and this hackathon series builds on that internal adoption by extending access and guidance to the broader developer community.

Competing teams will work to identify real-world problems and build AI-powered solutions, with mentorship provided by experts from both Sea and OpenAI. The hackathon runs from 8.00am to 9.00pm, giving participants a full day to develop and present their projects. Prizes are awarded in OpenAI API credits: the first-place team takes home US$30,000 in credits, second place receives US$15,000, and third place wins US$5,000. All members of the top five teams will also receive a one-year subscription to ChatGPT Pro.

Jon Sugihara, Head of AI Success Engineering, Asia Pacific at OpenAI, noted that participants will have access to Codex as well as frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, to turn their ideas into functional prototypes. Registration for the Sea x OpenAI Regional Codex Hackathon Series Malaysia edition is open now and closes on Friday, 6 November 2026.
