Google has rolled out its age assurance technology in Malaysia, extending protections that were previously introduced in Singapore, the United States, and other markets. The system is designed to identify whether a user is over or under 18, and to automatically apply age-appropriate settings for younger users across Google’s platforms.

Google’s New Age Assurance System

Similar to Discord, Google’s age assurance approach relies on two core methods: age estimation and age verification. The age estimation model uses machine learning to analyze signals already associated with a user’s account, such as the types of content they have searched for, to determine whether they are likely over or under 18. No additional data is collected as part of this process.

When the system estimates a user to be under 18, Google will notify them via email and through its products, explaining how their account settings have changed. If the estimate is incorrect, adult users have the option to verify their actual age by uploading a government-issued ID or a selfie photo.

For users inferred to be under 18, Google will automatically enable a set of enhanced protections across its services. SafeSearch Filter settings will be turned on by default to block explicit content, while mature material will be restricted on platforms including Google Play and Gemini. Personalized ads will be prohibited, and location timelines on Google Maps will be disabled.

On YouTube, Digital Wellbeing tools will be activated, including reminders to take a break and notifications for bedtime. Content recommendation safeguards will also be applied, with limits placed on repetitive viewing of certain categories of content.
