Apple has introduced a redesigned MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, which uses tandem OLED technology and adds touch input to the Mac for the first time. The laptop comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage.

The PROLED XDR display reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness and has a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, while ProMotion enables the refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. Apple says its display engine controls the color and luminance of each pixel at the sub-millisecond level, compensating for content, pixel use, temperature and environment to keep brightness and grayscale uniform.

The display covers both Apple P3 and Adobe RGB color gamut, with more than 80% coverage of Rec. 2020 for HDR video editing and color grading. Apple calibrates each panel at the factory, and both color spaces are available in a single default preset. An antireflective coating is standard, and a nano-texture option is now etched into the cover glass to reduce glare.

Touch support is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, which Apple says reduces latency. Users can scroll, pinch to zoom, drag and drop, and double-tap to fill a window. The touch input works alongside the keyboard and trackpad, and alongside that, a redesigned hinge improves stability (to reduce shakes when the finger physically contacts the display). Apple even brought video stabilization to the webcam when touch input is active during calls.

Since this is the first time macOS sees touch inputs, here’s what to expect. Apple says the operating system translates touches into clicks, so many existing apps work with Touch immediately; updated system gesture APIs allow developers to build touch-specific experiences. The Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac, and like on the iPhones, it shows Live Activities and lets users accept an AirDrop request, pick up a phone call or control music with a tap.

The new 14-inch model is now lighter at 1.36kg, and thickness is reduced by a miniscule 0.5mm; the 16-inch model weighs 1.81kg, and Apple shaved a millimeter off from the previous generation. Slimmer borders increase the display sizes to 14.2 inches and 16.3 inches respectively, while a redesigned thermal architecture maintains sustained performance and directs warm air away from the display. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, and fast charging reaches 50% in 30 minutes.

Processor options include Apple M5 Pro and M5 Max – each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, and the GPUs have a third-generation ray-tracing engine and Dynamic Caching. Apple says the M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on the device, provided you have the appropriately large unified memory configured to match.

The six-speaker system has a new woofer design with 50% deeper bass and new tweeters. It supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, and dedicated tuning applies when the lid is closed and the laptop is connected to an external display. A 12MP Center Stage camera and studio-quality microphones handle calls. Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. The M5 Pro supports up to three external displays, and the M5 Max supports up to four. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Touch ID are included.

For pro workflows, the Apple Pro Display Calibrator lets users calibrate to specific targets, and reference modes cover cinema, photography, print and design. New DICOM reference modes support medical image review (Apple’s disclaimer says: for research and educational purposes only). Apple Color Matching Function 2026 keeps colors consistent with iPhone 18 Pro or Studio Display XDR, while Genlock support for virtual production synchronizes the display with the camera capture to reduce screen tearing.

Customers can pre-order the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display from 29 October, with general availability starting this 6 November. The 14-inch model with M5 Pro starts at RM11,999, the 16-inch model with M5 Pro starts at RM14,499; the 14-inch model with M5 Max starts at RM19,299, and the 16-inch model with M5 Max starts at RM20,499.
