Many Proton enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to their vehicles, hoping for an over-the-air (OTA) update. However, the company has now confirmed that existing models, including the X90, S70, and the recently launched 2024 X50 RC, will not receive these features through an OTA update.

Proton’s Deputy CEO, Roslan Abdullah, and Head of Group Engineering and Technical, Haizam Ghazali, clarified this decision during the X50 launch event. They emphasized that current models will not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, despite previous indications that these features might be added through OTA updates.

Instead, they plan to introduce Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in new model launches. The upcoming facelifted X70 and potentially the 2025 model year updates for the X90 and S70 are expected to include these popular smartphone connectivity services. This decision means that existing customers, some of whom may have purchased their vehicles with the expectation of receiving these updates, will not benefit from the new features.

There is, however, some positive news. According to Roslan, they are in the final stages of securing license approval from Apple. This means that the very next launch, likely the facelifted X70, will come equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Pokdepinion: While the lack of OTA updates for existing Proton models may disappoint some customers, the introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in new models signals Proton’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience with modern connectivity features. That being said however, a lot of existing Proton owners are going to be really pissed off with this.
