Quick Charge 5 brings 100W fast charging, cooler temps and greater efficiency
Qualcomm has just announced Quick Charge 5, their latest fast charging standard that can support charging rates of over 100W. It is also compatible with industry standards like USB Power Delivery and older Quick Charge standards, which is always a nice touch, unlike certain brands that release their proprietary fast charging standards that only work with their own devices and their specific set of accessories.
Qualcomm promises that Quick Charge 5 will be able to fully charge a 4500mAh battery in 15 minutes, or 50% in 5 minutes. On top of that, they boast that QC5 will be up to 10°C cooler and up to 70% more efficient than Quick Charge 4/4+. The cooler temperatures should prevent further accelerating battery degradation, which is already an issue with current fast charging solutions.
Of course, how fast your device can charge will still rely on the implementation in your specific device. On Qualcomm’s end, Quick Charge 5 supports for up to 20V and 5A. Higher voltage and current are supported too, although As you might expect, there are also a number of temperature, voltage and current protections to avoid explosive results.
Qualcomm will be offered two new SMB1396 and SMB1398 power management ICs which support Quick Charge 5’s full feature set. Xiaomi might be the first to showcase Quick Charge 5’s 100W fast charging, as we have previously seen Xiaomi boast of 100W charging although it has yet to launch a device that can actually charge at that rate.
With that said, Qualcomm expects devices with Quick Charge 5 to appear in Q3 2020, which is anytime from now until September 2020.
