Sony Unveils a7C II, a7CR, Plus World’s Smallest & Lightest Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Sony Unveils a7C II, a7CR, Plus World's Smallest & Lightest Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Sony has announced the release of two new compact-class Alpha cameras, the a7C II and a7CR, and coming alongside is the new G-Master FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II lens that the company’s claims is the world’s smallest and lightest wide-angle zoom lens.

The a7C II succeeds the original a7C, and as one of the smaller offering in Sony’s Alpha lineup it weighs in at just 514g (22% lighter than a7 IV). Inside the camera body is the 33MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS full-frame sensor with BIONZ XR image processing engine (plus AI processing), with ISO ranging from 100-51200 for both image and video (50-204800 for image).

Meanwhile, the a7CR comes with the 61MP sensor that features the same back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor with BIONZ XR and AI processing, and it’s 29% lighter and occupies 53% less footprint over the a7R IV.  Its ISO range from 100-32000, with extended 50-102400 available for still images. Meanwhile, the Pixel Shift Multi Shooting feature can take multiple images in quick succession to stitch together a higher resolution than what the native sensor is capable of.

Both models sport the same XGA (1024×768) vari-angle touch-input LCD monitor; and the 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) provides up to 7 stops of compensation. 4K60 video is available for both (7K oversampling for a7C II and 6.2K oversampling for a7CR), with support for 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling mode, HLG, S-Log3, S-Cinetone and LUTs. USB-C PD, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth comes standard as well.

Launching alongside the a7C duo is the new G-Master FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II lens. The lens features a new optical design that enables F2.8 aperture for the entire 16-35mm zoom range, with a minimum shooting range of just 22cm, and a magnification as low as 0.32x. At 111.5mm long and 547g, it’s 20% lighter and Sony claims it’s the world’s smallest and lightest lens in its class.

The Sony a7C series is set to be available in Malaysia starting late-November 2023, with no pricing information listed at this writing (US pricing lists $2199.99 for a7C II and $2999.99 for a7CR); while G-Master FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II (model number SEL1635GM2) will soon be available, launching in mid-September 2023, with the price of RM11,399.

Pokdepinion: Pretty significant weight savings on the lens, should be a good news for photographers frequently on the move.
