Sony has recently announced its new gaming handheld – the PlayStation Portal (Sony probably wouldn’t call it ‘PSP’). This $199 handheld is essentially just a cloud gaming device, and it’s intended to be used as an extension of your existing PS5 console.

As far as handheld gaming devices go, this one comes with plenty of caveats. First – as mentioned, this is not a standalone device and it must be used in tandem with your existing PS5, as the handheld relies its processing from the console and streams locally to it using Wi-Fi connection. That also means you won’t get to access cloud gaming services like PS Plus Premium on the handheld itself, and PSVR2-supported games, naturally, doesn’t work either.

However, it’s functionally similar to a DualSense controller (with the shape to boot), with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that you come to expect from the console controller itself. The display is a 8-inch FHD 60Hz panel, fairly standard affair. It’s worth nothing that this device in a sense isn’t a handheld console that most people would think of, such as ASUS’s ROG Ally or Valve’s Steam Deck, but that also allowed Sony to price it for just $199 (for what is effectively, a controller with a screen attached to it).

Pokdepinion: Not sure if this is as much of a selling point to existing PS5 owners – I have my doubts.
