Dell Concept Luna Has An Interesting Take on Sustainable Laptops

Dell has officially unveiled their Concept Luna laptops, which are designed to be more sustainable, recyclable and reusable with a claimed 50% smaller carbon footprint. It’s developed in partnership with Intel.

For those of you who are unware, Concept Luna takes your standard laptop design and build, and then proceed to replace it with a more efficient layout with materials that are more eco-friendly to produce. For instance, the motherboard is 75% smaller with 20% less components used for manufacturing.

At the same time, everything is rearranged around the motherboard, which is positioned near the top for improved cooling, and the battery charging unit is positioned further away which should enable passive cooling (fan-less) for a more energy efficient design. As it is a specialized construction, the end product will also require 10 times lesser screws to hold up.

For the recyclable part to reduce carbon emissions, the aluminum body is produced via a stamped construction and processed using hydro power. The battery, while smaller than the ones found in most laptops today, feature deep-cycle cells which is said to hold charges for far longer, supposedly capable of being maintained and reused for many years beyond product’s own lifespan.

Speaking of maintain, Dell has also made it much easier to repair, claiming that a total disassembly, repair and reassembly process should take no more than 1.5 hours. Clearly, they’re trying to make it easier for customers to take it upon themselves for maintenance so they can continue using the Concept Luna laptops for much longer.

With that being said however, these are simply plans that Dell has in mind moving forward. No specific models have been announced yet but they’re certainly trying to make a more positive environmental impact within the industry. We will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: This certainly does sound interesting but I do wonder to what extent would it be easy to maintain and upgrade the laptop. If it can come close to a desktop PC’s level of upgrade potential, I think this would be a game-changing move.
