Recently, Google released the Android 13 developer preview 2 so we managed to learn of some of the new things coming to the mobile OS. For starters, we have redesigned media controls, which is found between Quick Settings and Notifications. Unlike before, the widget is larger to the point of fitting both the title and description, making it easier to see and use.

Apart from that, the media output picker has also seen a redesign to make it match better with the Android 13 design language. You can use this to pair to a new device, making the process more convenient.

The highlight of what we learned from developer preview 2 is the new wallpaper effects called “Cinematic Wallpaper”. Essentially, it lets you apply effects to your wallpaper to tweak the look or give it a different vibe. While the full list of effect aren’t known, we do know that you can dim the wallpaper, but you can already do this with Xiaomi’s MIUI and Samsung’s One UI.

Lastly, we have the Foreground Services task manager now positioned at the bottom of Quick Settings and Notification Panel. You can use it to monitor the apps that are currently running in the background, and choose to kill the process or not. It will notify you if an app has been running for more than 20 hours so make sure that you’re aware of what’s running.

Pokdepinion: If it makes my wallpaper look livelier, I look forward to it. I’m sure they’re going to add more and more new effects with future updates, so having the framework there is good enough for me.
