Residents in Malaysia will be able to access Google Search’s AI mode, the software giant has announced. This feature was first launched in the United States earlier this year, and is currently being rolled out to more regions, including Malaysia (although it only works in English).

Google says AI Mode is designed to handle longer and more complex queries that would typically require multiple searches, courtesy of a custom version of Gemini 2.5 model. Specifically, the company says AI Mode is “particularly helpful for exploratory tasks like comparing products, planning a trip, or understanding complex how-tos.” On a technical level, this is possible thanks to a “query fan-out technique” that breaks down long questions into several subtopics and going through each of them to acquire relevant data for its eventual response.

Besides text prompts, the Gemini model powering AI Mode works in other forms too: since it is multimodal, users can query through text, voice, and images. With Google pretty invested into AI these days, the company unsurprisingly says it’ll “aim to show an AI-powered response as much as possible” (whether that’s good or bad I’ll leave it up to you to decide). There will be exceptions though, such as when the AI do not have “high confidence” to give the proper response – in this case, standard web results will be shown instead.

Given that AI Mode has a major limitation being that it is English-only, that leaves a door open for competitors to fill in the Malay, Chinese and Tamil-speaking gaps. On that subject, Malaysia already have one such model created on the home soil, soon to be opened for early access.

Pokdepinion: Given that I usually search for highly specific stuffs, I haven’t found AI features being much useful. It’ll serve most people just fine though, I suppose.
