Apple is gearing up to unveil its iPhone 16 series, with the launch event rumored to be taking place on September 10. As anticipation builds, new details about the camera specifications for all four models have surfaced, promising exciting upgrades for photography enthusiasts.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Enhanced Dual Cameras

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are set to continue the dual-camera tradition of their predecessors, but with a notable design tweak. This time, the cameras will be vertically aligned on the back. The primary camera will retain the impressive 48 MP sensor found in the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, ensuring high-quality photos.
However, significant improvements come in the form of the ultrawide camera, which will now feature a faster f/2.2 aperture, compared to the f/2.4 in last year’s models. This change should enhance low-light photography, capturing more detail and reducing noise in darker settings. Additionally, the non-Pro iPhones are rumored to support macro photography for the first time, allowing users to take detailed close-up shots.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max: Unified Telephoto and Upgraded Ultrawide

For the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, Apple is bringing more parity between the two models. Both devices will now feature a 5x telephoto camera, a significant upgrade from last year, where this feature was exclusive to the larger Pro Max model. The telephoto lens will remain at 12 MP with an f/2.8 aperture, continuing to deliver sharp and clear zoomed-in photos.
The main camera on the Pro models will stay the same as last year, but the ultrawide camera is receiving a substantial upgrade. It will be a 48 MP pixel-binning sensor with .7 micrometer pixels, allowing for an effective pixel size of 1.4 micrometers when used in binning mode. This upgrade promises to deliver sharper, more detailed photos, even in challenging lighting conditions. Additionally, users will have the option to shoot 48 MP ProRAW photos, giving professional photographers more control over their images.
This year, Apple is also rumored to introduce a new photo format, JPEG-XL, which offers better compression and quality than traditional JPEGs. For video enthusiasts, the two Pro models will support 3K video recording at 120fps with Dolby Vision, enabling stunning video quality with high dynamic range.

One of the most exciting new features coming to all four iPhone 16 models is the Capture Button. This capacitive button will be dedicated to camera apps, allowing for enhanced control during photography. Unlike physical buttons, the Capture Button won’t actually move when pressed; it will respond to touch and pressure.
The button will have a force-sensitive half-press, accessible through a developer API, to enable actions like locking exposure and focus before fully pressing to capture a photo. Additionally, the capacitive nature of the button allows it to function as a trackpad—sliding a finger over it can trigger various actions, such as zooming in and out. Apple might use this gesture for zoom control, but third-party developers will also have the freedom to utilize the API for other innovative functions.
Pokdepinion: All of them getting a Capture button is a great move. I always loved that on Sony smartphones, and I always wished a good number of brands would adopt it. Maybe this time around, they might actually consider it.
