In the race to design a true bezel-less device, smartphone manufacturers have resorted to various novel approaches. OPPO went with a motoroized top to hide away all the cameras, vivo hid the selfie camera, while Xiaomi used a slider. The latter is what the honor Magic 2 uses, but it does come with a lot more under the 6.39″ OLED display.

Processing power is courtesy of the latest Kirin 980 7nm chipset, which is paired with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. The battery is decent, but tiny in comparison to the other HUAWEI flagships in recent times at just 3400 mAh. The honor Magic 2 still gets SuperCharge 2.0 though so you are set for some ridiculously fast charging.

The honor Magic 2 actually comes with three front facing cameras. That’s more cameras than most smartphones have on their backs. But two of them are curiously just for depth detection, with a primary 16MP sensor doing all the heavy lifting. Also under the screen is an under-display fingerprint scanner, bringing the honor Magic 2 on par with the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro.

Over on the back is a triple camera setup, sans the Leica branding. However it has maintained the monochrome sensor, over the new telephoto lens which the HUAWEI Mate 20 devices have adopted. The primary 16MP f/1.8 shooter is accompanied by a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera and a 24MP f/1.8 monochrome camera.

Pricing for the honor Magic 2 starts from 3799 yuan (~RM2280) for the 6GB + 128GB variant, and ranges all the way up to 4799 yuan (~RM2880) for the 8GB + 256GB version. There is also a new 3D IR Facial Unlock variant priced at 5799 yuan (~RM3480). This top-specced variant comes decked with 512GB of storage and is expected to come out later in December 2018.

Pokdepinion: I dig the wide-angle camera, but the rest of the camera hardware seems rather meh compared to the Mi MIX 3. Will have to see if in real life to pass judgement though.
