Huawei Patent Reveals Microscope Lens On Smartphones With 400x Magnification
Here’s a wild innovation courtesy of Chinese smartphone maker Huawei: per United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) filing, the company is looking into the idea of fitting a microscopic lens that allows for 20-400x magnification when viewed at around 0.5mm distance.
The patent is filed back in 2021 – when the Covid-19 pandemic is at its peak, causing factory shutdowns and medical emergencies. The idea is that users can use this special lens, combined with a standard macro camera lens, to zoom into an object and view its hygiene status. The filing also reveals the feature will supposedly be referred as “Micro mode”.
As shown on the screenshot above, the Micro mode will also use software algorithms to determine the cleanliness of an object (and lists the amount of pathogen types), and suggest hygienic actions if necessary. It could be a useful feature – although at this point as the pandemic has largely subsided, it’s unlikely to be on Huawei’s priorities right now. Besides, a feature like this may require regulatory approval from the likes of FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and other regional counterparts, in order to allow it to be marketed.

Pokdepinion: By the looks of it, it could take the photo of the bacteria itself. Kind of gross, if you ask me.
