OnePlus will finally be losing the only thing that separates them from OPPO: their Android skin, OxygenOS. After announcing that OxygenOS will be integrating ColorOS’s codebase a few months back, OnePlus has revealed that the upcoming OnePlus 10 will be running on a “unified and upgraded operating system” that will be shared with OPPO.

According to OnePlus’ blog post about “OnePlus 2.0”, the unified OS will be combining the strengths of OxygenOS and ColorOS, specifically the “fast and smooth, burdenless experience” of OxygenOS and the “stability and rich features” of ColorOS. The unified OS will be based on Android 12, and will be debuting on the next 2022 flagship, which would ostensibly be dubbed the OnePlus 10 series.

I guess the writing was on the wall all this while anyway. It will be interesting what OnePlus and OPPO will call this integrated custom skin. In any case, OnePlus promises that the unified OS will still retain the “DNA of OxygenOS”, whatever that means. After launching it on the OnePlus 10, the unified OS will be rolled out to their older smartphones as well.

It will be interesting to see whether smartphone enthusiasts will swing towards getting the OPPO flagships instead of OnePlus’, since the main advantage of OnePlus devices was the clean OxygenOS, and with it now no longer available, OPPO’s designs are probably a lot more enticing, especially considering that both brands will pretty much have the same hardware anyway.

Pokdepinion: Maybe OPPO should just absorb OnePlus into itself and delete this brand entirely. OnePlus was launched as a brand that delivers exceptional value, but that’s not something we have seen in recent years. And now without OxygenOS as a differentiating factor, they are just going to churn out OPPO devices under a different name. What’s the point?
