OnePlus 9 series to focus on camera improvements
OnePlus may have seen its focus on premium flagships for less money than the competition diluted with a slew of mid-range devices, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t intent on bringing the best with their flagships. This year’s OnePlus flagships, presumably the OnePlus 9 series, will bring huge camera improvements over past generations, according to OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau.
Pete Lau responded to a question on Weibo about what is OnePlus’ focus for 2021, and he responded that they have invested a lot in R&D for the camera, and will be striving towards being the world’s number one in imaging capabilities. There has been rumors of OnePlus working with Leica towards this goal, so we could see OnePlus deliver a much better camera with the OnePlus 9.
Rumors also point towards OnePlus bringing three OnePlus 9 devices to market, with the OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9 and a more affordable OnePlus 9E/OnePlus 9 Lite. The top-of-the-line OnePlus 9 Pro is slated to sport a Sony IMX689, which was already featured in the OnePlus 8 Pro. However the better optics that Leica can bring to the table might allow OnePlus to have an edge over the competition.
Imaging quality has reportedly been the main complaint reviewers had regarding the OnePlus flagships, so directly addressing it might allow the OnePlus 9 series to be more highly recommended. This will in turn drive up sales, which is in line with Pete Lau’s lofty sales targets for OnePlus.
