MWC Barcelona kicks off today, and as one of the biggest organizations in the mobile space, Qualcomm is introducing its latest AI-flavored innovations both in the software and hardware side of things.

One of the biggest announcements today is likely the AI Hub – the company describes it as “a new library of 75+ pre-optimized AI models” that developers can quickly grab and deploy on smartphones and devices. These include popular generative models such as Whisper, Stable Diffusion, ControlNet, and Baichuan 7B, designed to take advantage of Qualcomm’s NPU, CPU, and GPU for a four-fold increase in inferencing speed.

The company is also showcasing its latest process on various AI research programs, including LLaVA (Large Language and Vision Assistant) and LoRA (Low Rank Adaptation) running on an Android smartphone. The research team also demonstrated the world’s first on-device LMM (large multimodal model) with 7+ billion parameters on a Windows PC that can accept text and audio inputs to generate a conversation relating to the audio.

On the hardware side, Qualcomm today introduces the X80 5G Modem-RF system and FastConnect 7900 module that packs Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, and Ultra Wideband (UWB) into a single chip. Both features onboard AI processing to optimize performance characteristics, though it’s not entirely clear what kind of improvements we could be looking at, as Qualcomm did not provide any exact numbers for reference. Still, you should be able to see these chips in a smartphone or laptop near you in the coming months.

Finally, the chipmaker is also collaborating with telecommunications companies such as Deutsche Telekom, which brought a unique smartphone concept (in collaboration with Brain.ai) that does not feature any kind of apps – instead, it’s entirely AI-generated, and is described as a “personal concierge”.

Pokdepinion: On-device AI is definitely a milestone that companies are chasing to achieve today.
