Redmi Just Made A Phone Capable of 300W Charging

It’s a prototype based on its Note 12 Discovery Edition – but that charging power…

Smartphone companies, especially Chinese-based ones are very keen to push the limits on just how fast you can charge the battery to full capacity. This time around Redmi, the budget sub-brand of Xiaomi, has successfully developed a charging system that can push a staggering 300 watts to the phone’s 4,100mAh battery, completing the full charge in just 5 minutes.

Based on the infographic (in Chinese) posted on its Weibo page – the test started out with a heavily-modified version of the Note 12 Discovery Edition, with design improvements to the ‘charge pumps’ that achieves 98% conversion rate, which reduces the heat generation and provides additional thermal headroom for higher voltages and amperages. The test performed has seen the charging peaked at 290.6W, with sustained 280W for 2 minutes (nearly half of its entire charging duration).

The battery itself has also been modified to receive these amount of power, with 35% thinner cathode and anodes and new additives to reduce heat generation. On the charger side, it now uses dual-GaN system that do not increase the physical footprint over Xiaomi’s previous-generation 210W charger. There’s various heat-dissipation elements at work here too, including the use of graphene and fluid-based cooling.

Redmi also touted over 50 charging protection systems in place, including individual sensors and over-voltage, over-amperage, overheating and output protections on each charge pumps, with battery PCM (protection circuit module) protected significantly over the industry standard. The company didn’t mention a potential release of this tech so far, but if it does – would you buy one?
