NVIDIA GeForce Driver 531.18 Now Comes With RTX VSR Video Upscaling Tech
First previewed in CES – this feature uses Tensor Cores found in RTX cards to upscale videos from YouTube or other main streaming platforms.

NVIDIA today introduced the GeForce Game Ready Driver version 531.18 – aside from usual day-zero optimizations and bugfixes, this time there’s a new feature to go with it: RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR). Much like DLSS – the same Tensor Cores that drives this feature now can be used to upscale videos on web browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
The RTX VSR will require Chrome or Edge version 110 to work (the update is available early Feb, prior to driver launch). Once that is ready, all is needed is head to NVIDIA Control Panel – you can access it by right clicking Desktop, or just right click on the NVIDIA icon under system tray located on lower-right of your screen. Select ‘Adjust video image settings’ on the left pane then check the box labeled ‘Super Resolution’ under RTX Video enhancement section – and you’re good to go.

What VSR does is two-fold: first, it reduces compression artifacts such as blocky pixels and color banding; and second, it sharpens edges and enhances details with the reduction of jagged, pixelated edges. The work is done by using Tensor Cores, which the AI has been trained to identify various types of compression artifacts and reduce them on-the-fly, which traditional bicubic upscalers can’t do.

So far RTX 40 and 30 series GPUs can enable this feature – as for RTX 20 series GPUs which also contains Tensor Cores, NVIDIA has clarified that due to different Tensor Core architectures between Turing and Ampere/Ada, the algorithms needs to be ‘re-factored’ for these models (but they will be released in due course). Those using NVIDIA Studio drivers will get the RTX VSR feature update within this March, says the company. (NVIDIA has posted a full Q&A article here.)
Aside from this feature, the driver also includes DLSS 3 update for Atomic Heart; THE FINALS closed beta set to get Reflex, DLSS and RTXGI; and GeForce Experience auto-optimization for the following games:
- Atomic Heart
- Company of Heroes 3
- Hogwarts Legacy
- PERISH
- Sons Of The Forest
- The Settlers: New Allies
- Warlander
