Sony’s new Xperia 1 VII smartphone is now official, and it’s got additional development courtesy of Sony’s Alpha, Walkman, and BRAVIA divisions, with Walkman being the latest addition to help develop the smartphone’s audio (yes, 3.5mm headphone jack included). Also new is Sony’s take on on-device AI, aptly named ‘Xperia Intelligence’, which will be the umbrella term for all of the smartphone’s AI features.

On the camera department, the Xperia 1 VII introduces ‘AI Camerawork’ and ‘Auto Framing’, both designed to help users maintain stable and well-framed compositions of the subject with the help of AI. As for its hardware, you get a triple-camera setup, including a 48MP 1/1.56″ 16mm ultrawide sensor, a 48MP Exmor T wide-angle sensor with 24mm/48mm focal length, and a 12MP telephoto with 85mm-170mm zoom range. Sony also included a neat little feature that provides audio and haptic feedback for camera’s horizonal alignment.

For display performance, an additional rear light sensor is included onboard to adjust screen brightness and color settings based on ambient lighting; the display panel – a 6.5-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED panel with a more conventional 19.5:9 aspect ratio – includes Sunlight Vision technology and improved peak brightness for outdoor visibility (Sony didn’t list the exact brightness figures, however). For Walkman’s part, its audio engineers has helped designing Xperia 1 VII’s audio circuitry, and has given its onboard speakers extra oomph in the bass range.

Unsurprisingly, the new Xperia packs Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset; its battery remains at 5,000mAh, which admittedly has started falling behind the curve of offerings from Chinese smartphone brands. Still, you get the same microSD expansion (up to 2TB) that you won’t find in most other smartphones, along with the venerable headphone jack. Sony promises four OS upgrades and six years of security updates for its software.

The Xperia 1 VII will be available in Slate Black, Moss Green, and Orchid Purple in Malaysia starting mid-July 2025, though pricing is unannounced at the time of this writing.
