Xiaomi has yet to announce the Xiaomi 11T series, but they have peculiarly announced that the Xiaomi 11T and Xiaomi 11T Pro will be enjoying 4 years of updates. While the smartphones are gonna be coming later next week on 15th September, Xiaomi’s committing to 4 years of updates is definitely going to be a pretty huge selling point for the Xiaomi 11T series.

This essentially means that Xiaomi is stepping up to the plate, matching the likes of Samsung and OnePlus in terms of software support. The Xiaomi 11T series will be receiving three major Android updates, with 4 years of security updates. They are cautious to not give too much false hope to users of other Xiaomi devices though, with them only promising to “evaluate the possibility” of bringing the extended support to existing Xiaomi devices.

Xiaomi International’s Head of Product & Technology, Albert Shan, also mentioned that it is not going to be a simple task to provide system updates and security patches to all of its previous smartphone models. However he finds it “exciting” to face this challenge head on and being able to satisfy existing customers.

While older devices might not enjoy the longer life cycle, extended support is probably going to be a thing for upcoming Xiaomi devices, with Xiaomi deeming it to be a good move to meet Xiaomi’s sustainability and environmental responsibility goals.

With that said, Xiaomi does have a very wide range of products, ranging from uber-premium flagships like the Xiaomi MIX 4, all the way down to entry-level devices. Expecting four years of support across their range is probably quite impossible, but we do hope that Xiaomi’s recent flagship and mid-range devices gets the extended support.

Pokdepinion: At the rate that Xiaomi churns out devices, extending the support is going to add to their software team’s workload quite significantly. Kudos to them for taking on the challenge though!
