Apple’s highly anticipated mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, was unveiled in June to much fanfare. While it boasts an array of impressive features, the substantial $3,500 price tag may deter many potential buyers. However, another significant concern has arisen regarding its comfort.

According to a recent Bloomberg report by renowned Apple leaker Mark Gurman, early testing of Apple’s Vision Pro headset has revealed issues related to size and weight, leading to neck strain among users. To address this problem, Apple engineers are already hard at work on the next iteration of the Vision Pro, with a primary focus on reducing its weight and size to enhance comfort during extended usage.

Gurman’s report stated, “Work on the next Vision Pro remains early, but the company is hoping to make the device lighter and at least slightly smaller.” Testers have reported that the headset can feel excessively heavy, even during short periods of use. Apple may also explore the option of introducing an over-the-head strap to alleviate this issue in the first-generation Vision Pro.

Additionally, Apple is addressing concerns for users who wear prescription glasses. The current headset lacks sufficient space for eyeglasses, prompting Apple to collaborate with Zeiss to create prescription lenses that can magnetically attach to the Vision Pro’s displays. However, accommodating various lens combinations is a complex task, and Apple is contemplating shipping customized Vision Pros with pre-installed prescription lenses. This approach, while practical, raises concerns about the device’s resale value and does not account for potential changes in users’ eyesight over time.

Another potential solution is the development of augmented reality spectacles capable of overlaying information onto the lenses. This shift towards augmented reality, as opposed to virtual reality, could offer a more comfortable and feature-rich experience. Gurman suggests that Apple temporarily halted development of its AR spectacles last year due to technological limitations but anticipates a return to the project in the future.
