Apple’s Vision Pro headset is certainly a technological marvel, enabling what the company calls “Spatial Computing” – users no longer require a discrete controller to interface with the device, which is one of the big selling points of the device. However, not many people want to buy this headset, as evidenced by the slowing sales.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says the excitement for Apple’s VR/AR device has subsided since its launch and the demand for demos and the device itself has been significantly reduced. “Demand for demos is way down. People who do book appointments often don’t show up, and sales – at least at some locations – have gone from a couple of units a day to just a handful in a whole week,” the analyst said.

He further notes that, as an owner of the Vision Pro himself, he has barely used the device for work, and usage for media consumption is limited as well. Pain points like attaching the external battery pack, booting the device, and navigating the visionOS have all proved inconvenient compared to conventional laptops or tablets.

Admittedly, the sky-high $3,500 price tag is hardly going to make it a mainstream product. The biggest player in the VR/AR industry, Meta – of which its VR business is formerly Oculus – owns a significant share of the market with an affordable Quest lineup that costs only hundreds of dollars in comparison.

While some of these issues can be fixed in the next iteration of the Vision Pro, Gurman previously noted in February this year that the next-gen headset is at least “18 months away” from launch.

Pokdepinion: That price tag is just simply too expensive – and probably unhelpful in making people buy into VR/AR.
