Apple has long faced criticism for its closed ecosystem, which limits interoperability with non-Apple devices. However, contrary to popular belief, Apple disclosed that it explored the possibility of making the Apple Watch compatible with Android smartphones over a span of three years.

The DOJ lawsuit accuses Apple of maintaining an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market by compelling users to stick with iPhones due to the exclusive compatibility of the Apple Watch with iOS devices. This practice, known as gatekeeping, allegedly inhibits competition in the industry.

Apple contends that despite considering the idea, technological constraints prevent the Apple Watch from functioning seamlessly with Android phones. While this explanation echoes previous claims of incompatibility, it marks the first time Apple has officially acknowledged exploring cross-platform compatibility for its wearable device.

The revelation adds an intriguing layer to the ongoing legal battle between Apple and the DOJ, shedding light on the complexities of tech industry practices and consumer choice amidst allegations of anticompetitive behavior.
