Let’s be honest, nobody likes their PC games having an extra launcher to get in the way before you launch the game, especially when Steam and Epic Games Store already took care of that. To many players’ excitement – recently, 2K Games announced a “complete sunset” of its proprietary launcher for its games, meaning they can all be launch directly. Big W for PC gamers, indeed.

In case you’re unfamiliar, here’s some context: 2K’s game launcher has gained some notoriety over the years for dragging performance down in its games, and the lack of mod support for specific titles like XCOM 2 also did nothing to help its case. It even caused compatibility issues with Steam Deck that required workarounds on the Proton compatibility layer to make games work.
The removal of the 2K Launcher has in fact started this October, but the process was only recently just completed, leaving systems with its launcher installed to convert the original 2K Launcher folder into a text file named ‘2kLauncherRemoved.txt’, which can be safely deleted. To complete the removal process, the game publisher instructed users on Steam to reboot the app (or the system), or update the game to its latest version if they’re on Epic’s platform.
That being said, some games will still have to go through extra steps to launch properly, for which the publisher has provided a summary of workarounds to do so in its blog post (where you can also refer to some of the FAQs of this process). All in all, a big win for PC gamers who swear by performance – so EA and Ubisoft, are you reading this?
