A Fallout 4 Mod Uses Voice AI To Create New Dialogues For NPC
More than 300 lines added, all without the need of human voiceovers.
Adding custom dialogues has been a thing for as long as roleplaying-based games has been around, with the help of community-produced mods for the games that need one. Though, custom dialogues in the past has basically felt like those old Nintendo games with dialogue presented on screen and nothing else – until now.
In Fallout 4, a mod called Roleplayer’s Expanded Dialogue (RED) adds over 300 new lines of dialogues complete voiceovers thanks to the help of AI voice generation. All those lines will be given to the player based on their stats, such as Strength, Medic, and even based on whichever perks you currently possess – as opposed to a simple Charisma stat level in the vanilla game.
How did the voices come by? The mod creator ProfMajowski used ElevenLabs voice AI to get the job done. It’s not perfect – some dialogues, according to the modder “sound a little ’emotionless’,” but these dialogues otherwise “basically sound like the real thing”. This may open up to new opportunities to other RPG-based games that can given a new breath of life, especially the older, retired titles.
