DualSense Controller Made Possible Thanks to DualShock 2 Feature

These Are All The ROG Phone 3 Accessories That You Can Get

Did you know that the DualShock 2 controller for the PS2 had built-in pressure-sensitive buttons? This means that if you were to press a button, the strength that you put in can influence the strength of the action in the game. For instance, press the cross button lightly will see CJ accelerate slowly in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas but a full press will see him speed up immensely.

In a different example, lightly holding the square button in Metal Gear Solid 2 will see Snake aim his gun while pressing it further will finally see him take a shot. Of course, not all games make use of this feature, but it was there and it was an interesting concept nonetheless. This was made possible with tiny curved disks underneath the buttons that will touch a conductive strip on the DualShock 2’s circuit board. Essentially, the higher the pressure, the more contact it will make.

The DualSense controller on the PS5 doesn’t use pressure-sensitive face buttons but I’m sure you’ve heard of the adaptive triggers with haptic feedback. In games like Returnal, you can really control and feel your shots instead of just blindly firing to destroy enemies, adding another layer of immersion to your gaming experience.

It’s not limited to just shooting mechanics either as in NBA 2K, you can control the speed of how your player dribbles with how much you press down the triggers. It seems so simple but it’s an important part of the next gen gaming experience. It’s amazing to think that we had a similar technology way back in the year 2000 that made this one not just possible, but even better.

Pokdepinion: While this makes gaming a lot more immersive, it will require the developers to pay even closer attention to the finest of details to really make use of it. Otherwise, it would just be a wasted feature on the DualSense but it’s a good thing we’re already seeing a number of good implementations for it.
