PS5 Pro Believed To Be Launching In 2H 2024

CNBC reports that Sony may be launching a mid-cycle update to its console lineup in the form of PlayStation 5 Pro. “There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024,” Serkan Toto, CEO of  Tokyo-based consultancy firm Kantan Games, told CNBC.

Analysts claim that the reduced sales forecast for the PS5, in particular, is a sign that the Japanese company may be introducing a new model to boost overall sales. The company cut its sales forecast for this fiscal year down to 21 million units, from 25 million units originally; a “gradual decline” in sales is expected in the following year.

Tom’s Guide has compiled a list of known rumors about the new console so far. This includes a frame generation feature that should boost framerates significantly, possibly involving the use of NPU based on AMD’s XDNA2 architecture. However, the CPU itself may retain Zen 2 architecture, with boost clocks raised significantly. On the GPU front, Sony may adopt a bespoke design from AMD that mixes RDNA3 architecture with some elements carried from the future RDNA4 architecture.

There are other factors that point to the potential launch of PS5 Pro, according to analysts. One such factor is the lifecycle – Sony launched the more powerful PS4 Pro around three years after the original PS4’s launch. For reference, PS5 was launched in November 2020, making the console a little over three years old today.

Another factor can be attributed to Grand Theft Auto VI, set to be released in 2025 as it is highly anticipated to be the biggest release of the year or even the decade. A new console launched right before Rockstar’s blockbuster hits the scene will be pushing significant amounts of console sales, or as Toto puts it: “a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”
