The YouTube Kids app, so you don’t have to worry about them wandering into that weird part of YouTube.

I’m an avid watcher of YouTube videos for quite a number of years now, so much so that I don’t watch television anymore. I’m not kidding, I’d rather watch Seananners, Smosh, and a bunch of other YouTubers than Game of Thrones. However, this isn’t exactly something I’d recommend for everyone.

I can’t deny that YouTube has this ‘other side’ to it, filled with videos that are grim, violent, or downright strange in nature. If it was someone like me, we’d be able to stomach the videos without any problems but if children were to stumble upon those videos, I’m not sure what would happen to their mental state.

Enter YouTube Kids

To address this potential issue, the YouTube Kids app came to life. It’s an app built with parents and children in mind that makes it easier for children to find videos on topics they want to explore…without the ‘scary’ surprises of course. It’s not exactly a brand new app, as it was launched earlier in 14 other countries but after seeing quite a bit of success, it has finally reached Malaysia.

The app itself has a more child-centric theme, with a more bright and playful design compared to its main app counterpart. If ya boi or gal wanted to find some videos on Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine, or other kids shows, the search algorithm for the YouTube Kids app makes it easier to find these kinds of videos.

After all, the app was built to be a more family-friendly version of YouTube, a place for kids to explore their imagination and curiosity in a safe environment. There are 4 categories for you to browse in this app, which are:

  1. Shows
  2. Music
  3. Learning
  4. Explore

Not to forget, the app itself does have parental control, so if you’re still worried about dem kids seeing some stuff that they shouldn’t, you have the power to protect them. With parental controls, you can:

  • Learn how the app works: When parents open YouTube Kids, they learn upfront how the system chooses and recommend content and how to flag videos. YouTube will ensure that the content within the app falls under the family-friendly category but no system is perfect. So if you ever find a video you’re concerned about, please flag it. This helps make YouTube Kids better for everyone.
  • Search settings: YouTube Kids will prompt you to make a choice about how broadly you want your child to explore – turn search on to access millions of family-friendly videos, or turn search off to restrict your child’s experience to a more limited set. Either way, parents decide the right experience for their family from the get-go.
  • Timer: Let the app be the bad guy with a built-in timer that lets you limit kids’ screen time. The app alerts your child when the session is over, so you don’t have to.
  • Sound settings: Sometimes you need a little peace and quiet! You have an option to turn off background music and sound effects, so your kids can keep watching while parents can catch a breath.
  • Custom passcode: Parents have the ability to set their own passcode, and to access settings and other parental information in the app.
  • YouTube Kids on the big screen: You can now also watch YouTube Kids as a family on your big screen using Chromecast, Apple TV, game consoles, or a smart TV.

Don Anderson, Head of Kids and Learning Partnerships of YouTube Asia Pacific, said:

As a father of two young children, I’ve had first-hand exposure to the power of video and how it can enrich a child’s life, whether it is through listening to nursery rhymes, or accessing math and science content, or a host of other topics that entertain and engage. YouTube Kids is our first step in reimagining YouTube for families, an experience that gives you a world of video in your pockets, and a world of possibility and knowledge at your fingertips. We’re excited to see how YouTube Kids will better help your family explore, learn, and sing along.

No longer will you have to worry about the young ones stumbling upon things that they’re not supposed to see. The YouTube Kids app is now available on Google Play and the App Store.
