Previously, we reported about two Nintendo Switch variants in the works. With the Nintendo Switch Lite now official, as we’ve reported here, one would start to wonder if the stronger Pro variant is coming soon. As it turns out, it might not be happening soon but the Nintendo Switch is getting an upgrade in CPU and storage.

According to The Verge, a Class II Premission Change has been submitted to the Federal Communications Commission with regards to a new CPU and updated storage chips. For those of you who aren’t aware, a Class II Permission Change is a request to modify an existing piece of technology without the need to re-certify it for sale in the United States.

There will be changed made to two kinds of chips in the original Nintendo Switch. The first is the SoC / chipset which houses the CPU and GPU. As many of you know, it is currently powered by the NVIDIA Tegra X1, which is four years old by now. The second is the flash storage chip / NAND memory.

It won’t necessarily come with huge performance boosts but it will be an improvement regardless. It could even be a more optimized version of the Tegra X1 chipset. Something with more significant improvements would most likely be saved for the Pro variant, which is yet to be confirmed.

Regardless, we expect the original Nintendo Switch to have fasted load times, improved battery life, and run at a cooler temperature. There may be more but we’ll have to wait for more details to find out.

Pokdepinion: It’s a powerful hardware for what it offers, but some upgrades here and there would certainly be nice. Especially anything that would help speed up the loading times. It’s not horrendous like on the base PS4, but there’s always room for improvement.
