 Malaysia through a camera lens

In honour of Malysia’s 60th National Day, in partnership with HATCH, Panasonic Malaysia held a short film competition called “HACTION! Shot on Lumix GH5” which aims to showcase the journey of Malaysia’s achievements and national pride over the last six decades through the eyes of six Malaysian film makers. HATCH is a YouTube channel under Media Prima’s Studio8 that seeks to showcase original and experimental ideas from aspiring film makers.

Studio8 has a reputable record of producing unique and original Malaysian content that strives to push the boundaries of which stories could be told. With HACTION!, they aim to inspire local film makers into making their own personal take on Malaysia’s achievements and pride.

SIx film makers were chosen for the HACTION! short film competition with each tasked to create a short film not longer than 5 minutes that highlights the beauty of Malaysia and the six decades of unity, peace and harmony. All of these film makers were provided with an RM4,000 production budget and equipped with a Panasonic LUMIX GH5 for audio and visual recording. The short films must be shot, completed and submitted within a given period of 30 days.

The panel judges included some very well known faces from the industry, which were, Ahmad Izham Omar, CEO of Primeworks Studios, Mr. Hiroyuki Muto himself, and Low Ngai Yuen, renowned film director and actress as the guest judge. The judging process isn’t entirely down to the judges however, as it is partially up to a public vote which was opened a few weeks prior.

Pokdepinion: I love these sort of competitions. Not only is it a good platform for our local film makers to showcase their passion and film making talents, but with the subject matter of HACTION!, it also gives them an opportunity to truly think and reflect on what it means to be a proud Malaysian.
