Western Digital’s 14TB Ultrastar Hs14 with HelioSeal technology; 40% more capacity and more than 2x performance over predecessor!
Western Digital has just announced the world’s first 14TB enterprise-class hard drive featuring host-managed shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology, the Ultrastar Hs14. The new hard disk offers 40% more capacity and more than twice the sequential write performance of its SMR predecessor.
The drives are available in two variants, a SATA 6 Gb/s variant and a SAS 12 Gb/s version. Both feature the same 14TB capacity in the 3.5” form factor and run at 7200 rpm. Both variants of the Ultrastar Hs14 feature a 233 MB/s sustained transfer rate. Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is rated at a whopping 2.5 million hours, so reliability is definitely one of the Ultrastar Hs14’s strong suits.
The Ultrastar Hs14 drives manage to achieve this huge step in capacity and speed by harnessing fourth generation HelioSeal technology and second generation host-managed SMR. This also allowed Western Digital to lower the total cost of ownership with high storage density and efficiency.
Western Digital also shared that helium-based high capacity drives make up over 70% of the exabytes that they ship into the capacity enterprise segment, a testament to their drives’ reliability, performance and value Quality of Service (QoS).
The Ultrastar Hs14 drives are currently sampling to select OEMs and comes with a 5-year limited warranty. For more information, do visit the minisite for more information.
